Annual fete celebrates faculty achievements and contributions

Robert Magee, chairman and CEO of Woodbridge Group was presented with the Faculty of Engineering Leadership Award in recognition of his contributions to the Faculty, community and engineering profession. Woodbridge Group is a multinational manufacturing company with 64 facilities in 21 countries.
Vladimir Sobot (civil engineering '80) and Chedo Sobot (civil engineering and management '85), co-owners of Sobotec Ltd., were presented with the L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. Sobotec is a Hamilton-based engineering and manufacturing firm specializing in building exteriors.
More than 30 faculty members and students were recognized for their achievements and accomplishments over the past year. These included professional recognitions, teaching contributions, major funding awards, appointments, and competition results.
The Faculty of Engineering Leadership Award was established in 2004 to recognize an outstanding citizen who has contributed to engineering, the University and the community. Past recipients include: Carl Fuerst, chief scientist for General Motors of Canada; Joseph Liburdi, president, Liburdi Engineering; Joseph Ng, president, JNE Consulting; Douglas Barber, co-founder, Gennum Corporation; and John Mayberry, former chairman and CEO, Dofasco.
The L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award was established in 2006 to recognize the contributions of leading faculty alumni. Past recipients include: Kurt Strobele, president and CEO, Hatch; Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division and Michael Pley, president, COM DEV have received the Engineering Alumni Award.
