Alumnus wins CBC’s Canada Reads

Alumnus and former McMaster Students Union president Terry Fallis' book The Best
Laid Plans has won CBC Radio's Canada Reads contest.
The annual “battle of the books” features five Canadian novels defended by celebrities
whose job it is to convince the public that their book should be the winner. Fallis' book
was championed by Canadian-raised CNN personality Ali Velshi.
A satirical look at the Canadian political landscape, The Best Laid Plans follows the
exploits of engineering professor and reluctant candidate for Parliament Angus
McLintock. The book earned Fallis a Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour in 2008 and
was named one of the top five essential Canadian novels of the decade by the CBC.
Ami McKay's The Birth House, defended by home decorating expert and TV personality
Debbie Travis, was the contest's other finalist. Previous winners include Michael
Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion, Miriam Toews's A Complicated Kindness and Lawrence
Hill's The Book of Negroes.
Fallis earned his bachelor of engineering from McMaster in 1983. His professional
career includes time spent working in both provincial and federal politics.
Both The Best Laid Plans and Fallis' sequel The High Road are available at Titles
Bookstore.
