The UN’s ‘blog off’ competition ends Monday.”]Budding environmental journalist Kyle Empringham has a shot at covering World
Environment Day for the United Nations, but he needs your help.

Empringham, a graduate of McMaster's science program, is competing in the UN
Environment Program's “blog off”
. The competition pits green bloggers against each
other in a bid to win the grand prize: a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to cover World
Environment Day on June 5.

The bloggers each published two posts throughout the month of April, which are
currently being voted on by the public. Empringham had amassed more than
1,900 votes as of Friday morning, putting him in second place in the competition.

He first entered the annual contest in 2010 and, although he didn't win, enjoyed writing
so much that he co-founded an environmental news and blogging site called The
Starfish
.

The site, which covers biodiversity, conservation, health, lifestyle, technology, food and
agriculture, is meant to both educate and encourage action.

“The environment is something a lot of people feel a little disconnected from,” he said.
“They don't always understand how things affect them, so I started The Starfish to fill in
those gaps.”

Empringham says everyone can do something to better the environment – a message he
hopes to send to readers of both his UN blog and The Starfish.

“Everyone can make a difference. Small things can add up.”

Empringham is currently studying at Simon Fraser University's School of Resource and
environmental management, focusing on marine science and communications.

The UN blog off ends April 30.
