“With this year marking the 25th anniversary of the Alumni Gallery, it is sure to be a splendid occasion, and a day for all McMaster alumni, faculty and students to celebrate,” says Roger Trull, vice-president, University Advancement.

On Saturday, June 2 at 3 p.m., the Student Centre's CIBC Banquet Hall will be the setting for this year's Alumni Gallery ceremonies, a setting that will host many of McMaster's finest, including the seven new inductees to the Gallery.

This year, the McMaster Alumni Association is proud to induct the following individuals into the ranks of the alumni “hall of fame”:

  • Michiko Ayukawa: 1952 & 1953 Faculty of Science

A trip to Japan in 1983 precipitated an interest in her ancestral roots, and Ayukawa began a study of Japanese language, literature and histories of both Japan and Canada. She has published many articles on the history of Japanese immigrants and the experiences of the Japanese Canadians during World War II.

  • Gordon Carruth: 1956 & 1962 Faculty of Humanities

After working for the Hamilton Board of Education for 32 years as a teacher, coach and administrator, Carruth went on to write musical comedy and drama, which were first performed at Hamilton Place, then across Canada, in Germany and at the Edinburgh Festival.

  • Robert Cushman: 1976 & 1984 Faculty of Health Sciences

Robert Cushman is chief executive officer of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, one of 14 agencies in Ontario with a mandate to plan, co-ordinate, integrate and fund healthcare services at the regional level.

  • Luis Garcia-Rubio: 1976 & 1981 Faculty of Engineering

The inventor of the licensed spectrophotometric disease detection technique, Luis Garcia-Rubio is an internationally renowned researcher and founder and principal of Claro Scientific LLC, a bio-medical company focused on development of the technique.

  • John R. Hogg: 1981 Faculty of Science

John R. Hogg has been directly involved in the discovery of more than two trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 100 million barrels of oil. He is currently vice-president of exploration for MGM Energy in Calgary.

  • Gary Kain: 1969 Faculty of Social Sciences and 1973 Faculty of Business

Kain founded Regional Cablesystems Inc., a cable television, high-speed Internet and telecom company with operations throughout Canada and the Bahamas. Since retiring, he has been an active member of the Board of Directors with several local organizations.

  • Marnie Rice: 1970 Faculty of Social Sciences

Rice is a clinical psychologist who, in her long and distinguished career, has made many significant contributions to the study of mental illness and human aggression. She is a scientific director of the McMaster/Penetanguishene Centre for the Study of Aggression and Mental Disorder.

“McMaster is proud to announce these seven distinguished inductees, and welcome them to the Alumni Gallery,” says Trull. “Their accomplishments are exemplary and will inspire McMaster students to continue to set their bars high and strive for excellence in both their studies and their vision for the future.”

Everyone is welcome to come out to the 25th Anniversary Alumni Gallery Induction & MAA Award Ceremony to celebrate this wonderful milestone and the achievements of these outstanding individuals.

The Induction Ceremony is followed by the President's Dessert Party, free to everyone, featuring a variety of desserts, a chocolate fountain and live music. Bring along your co-workers, family and friends to take part in the celebrations.
