Social Sciences grads and Hamilton-based rockers Arkells were big winners at the JUNOs Sunday night.

The band members, who got their start playing campus stages, gave a shout out to their alma matter from the JUNO stage during CTV’s live broadcast of the awards.

“This is an embarrassment of riches, we feel so lucky to be in this category… Our first show was about 10 minutes away from here at McMaster University; the second show was at the Casbah about two blocks away. To be on this stage is totally overwhelming,” said lead singer Max Kerman during the band’s award acceptance speech.

The band took home Rock Album of the Year and Group of the Year at the annual celebration of Canadian music, held this year in downtown Hamilton.

The group also performed their song “Come To Light” with Boris Brott and the National Academy Orchestra.
