Albert Lager Lecture Series to open with an alpine challenge

The annual series of educational lectures and events, named after McMaster graduate Albert Abrum Lager begins Saturday, Sept. 18 with Operation: Alumni Altitude! Family Event. Alumni and families are invited to experience the Alpine Tower, a leadership and teamwork development facility located near the Ivor Wynn Centre.
The event takes place from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants are asked to meet in front of the Ivor Wynne Centre. The cost is $18 per adult, $10 per child
On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the series presents Haida: Last of the Tribal Class Destroyers. Haida is the last remaining example of the 27 Tribal Class Destroyers built for the Royal Canadian Navy, the British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy between 1937 and 1945. A guest speaker will recount the history of the Haida at the HMCS HAIDA National Historic Site, 658 Catharine Street North, Hamilton, Ontario L8L 4V7. The lecture will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. and the cost is $5 per person.
On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Shannon Kyles, a 1978 McMaster graduate and instructor at Mohawk College, will present Hidden Treasures in the Hamilton Cityscape. Kyles created the ontarioarchitecture.com Web site, to help people of all ages appreciate the architecture in their own town or city. The presentation takes place in Gilmour Hall, Council Chambers, Room 111 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person (includes light refreshments).
The series will then travel to the Shaw Festival for “Three Men on a Horse”, joined by guest lecturer Peter Cockett. Taking place Thursday, Oct. 7, the day will be filled with education, fine cuisine and a matinee performance. The cost is $85 per person.
Margaret Houghton '74 will present “Rest in Peace: Cemeteries & Funerals” in Hamilton on Oct. 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Gilmour Hall Council Chambers Rm. 111. Houghton will give an illustrated slide presentation showing the development of cemeteries in Hamilton, the history of tombstones and their ornamentation, and examples of tombstones and monuments to many Hamiltonians, well-known and unknown. The cost is $5 per person (includes light refreshments)
On Monday, Nov. 1, McMaster political scientist Henry Jacek '80 will explore Politics, Public Services and Taxes: Why are Citizens so Unhappy? This lecture will take place in Gilmour Hall, Council Chambers, Room 111 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.. Cost of admission is $5 per person (includes light refreshments)
Gary Purdy '62, director of McMaster's Centre for Peace Studies, and University Professor in McMaster's engineering department, will explore Achieving Peace in Our Time: An Individual Approach on Wednesday on Nov. 17, in Gilmour Hall, Council Chambers, Room 111 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person (includes light refreshments).
With just weeks until Christmas, McMaster executive chef Gordon Cooledge will teach participants how to prepare a spectacular holiday menu. This event takes place Wednesday, Dec. 1, and Tuesday, Dec. 7 in the McMaster University Student Centre, CIBC Hall, 3rd Floor from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $55 per person (dinner included and cash bar available).
The final event is called On the Move: Understanding the Migration of Healthcare Providers. Presented by Ivy Bourgeault, Canada Research Chair in Comparative Health Labour Policy at McMaster, the lecture will examine migration policies and the experiences of immigrant health care practitioners in Canada, and will compare them to other high income countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. This event takes place Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 in Gilmour Hall, Council Chambers, Room 111 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person (includes light refreshments).
