Young Empires, a Toronto-based rock band known for the hit singles 'White Doves' and ' We Don't Sleep Tonight,' will headline a Graduate Student Week concert in Faculty Hollow Sept. 5.


McMaster’s graduate student community will mark the beginning of the fall term with Graduate Student Week, featuring an eclectic mix of activities.

The week’s events have been coordinated by the School of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Students Association and the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL), in partnership with the Student Success Centre. Check out the itinerary below:

Wednesday, Sept. 4

The annual Teaching and Learning Forum features a variety of workshops aimed at helping grad students and TAs enhance their skills in the classroom and beyond. These sessions are presented by McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL).
Where: Burke Science Building
Time: 8:30 a.m. Register Online

Thursday, Sept. 5

Grab a bite to eat, mingle with other students and learn more about your Graduate Students Association (GSA) at the annual GSA Barbecue at Phoenix Bar & Grill.
Where: Phoenix Bar & Grill (The Refectory Building)
Time: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Turn it up! A free concert in Faculty Hollow featuring Toronto-based Young Empires and Vancouver’s Hey Ocean! (along with McMaster student band Of Gentlemen and Cowards) will take place Thursday night.
Where: Faculty Hollow, behind Hamilton Hall
Time: Gates open at 7 p.m. for graduate students. Please bring your McMaster grad student ID to enter. General admission with a valid student card begins at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 6

The 17th annual Graduate Student Awards will celebrate the achievements of the McMaster graduate community. These awards recognize the important contributions made by students, staff and faculty at the University.
Where: CIBC Hall
Time: 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Please arrive at the hall prior to 2:55 p.m.)

Saturday, Sept. 7

Explore the trails around campus and enjoy the local community during Nature Day, a family-friendly event that guides participants from campus to Churchill Park through several trails.
Where: The hike will begin at the climbing tower behind the Ivor Wynne Centre, with events to follow at Churchill Park
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
