A tale of typography as told by an Art-Sci (in stop-motion!)

The History of Typography

Most people tend to overlook typography’s essential role in design (not to mention human communication).

But most people aren’t Ben Barrett-Forrest.

In April the fourth year Arts & Science and multimedia student and aspiring designer created a stop-motion animation detailing the history of typography.

The video has since been watched more than half a million times and been shared around the web, including in a recent article posted to The Atlantic magazine’s website.

“The History of Typography – Animated Short” takes viewers from the early days of the typeface Blackletter, based on the writing of scribes, to modern fonts created with the help of computers – and even pokes fun at Comic Sans along the way.
