Hall will be the new Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary starting Aug. 1. “]Fred L. Hall, twice appointed Dean of McMaster's School of Graduate Studies, is leaving McMaster to become Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary effective August 1.
“All I can say is it's been a fascinating one-third of a century at McMaster,” said Hall. “I have enjoyed advancing Graduate Studies at McMaster and will miss the many friendships I have developed. However, I look forward to a new mandate and the opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the University of Calgary.”
“While I'm pleased that Fred's leadership and expertise are recognized in the work he has done for our School of Graduate Studies, I will certainly miss his wise counsel and the leadership he has shown in his long tenure at McMaster,” said President Peter George. “Fred's contributions as a faculty member and to McMaster's success in graduate studies has been a great asset for us and I'm sure that he will be a key contributor in his new position.”
Hall has served McMaster in many capacities since he joined the University in 1972 as a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. He has been Dean of Graduate Studies since 1999.
Hall will be among many familiar faces at the University of Calgary. Its president, Harvey Weingarten, is a former McMaster provost and Calgary's current provost, Alan Harrison, was formerly McMaster's dean of Social Sciences.
