Expert opinion:
The Globe and Mail, National Post, Canadian PressCBC Toronto News, CBC Radio programs As It Happens and Here & Now, CHML-AM and Toronto Life cited the analysis of Michael Veall (Economics) who, with others, found that the arithmetic behind Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak’s Million Jobs Plan was apparently faulty. Later in the week, CP interviewed Veall about an NDP proposal to save $600 million a year, without making painful cuts, a claim he also found to be dubious.

The Globe and Mail published a Canadian Press story about the tone of the provincial election campaign, featuring analysis by Peter Graefe (Political Science). CBC Radio’s Ontario Today featured Graefe as a guest, while The Hamilton Spectator featured him and Bill Scarth (Economics) in a piece on costing out election platforms.

CBC TV’s The National and CBC Radio’s Here and Now used audio from an interview with Marvin Ryder (Marketing) about the controversy that erupted when Lenovo mistakenly offered a very low price on laptops and had to cancel online orders that had already been processed.

Global National News interviewed Liyakat Takim (Sharjah Chair of Global Islam) about the killing of a Canadian cardiologist in Pakistan. The physician, a member of the minority Ahmadiyya sect, was believed to have been targeted because of the group’s moderate beliefs.

CTV News Channel interviewed Amber Skye (Indigenous Studies) about maternal health services for indigenous populations.

The Brampton Guardian quoted Sonia Anand (Medicine) about the importance of clinics to educate South Asian women about the risks of heart problems.

Teaching, learning and student success:
The Globe and Mail and Maclean’s featured Allison Sekuler (Associate vice-president and dean, School of Graduate Studies) in stories about the ways universities are helping PhDs find relevant work in non-teaching jobs.

The Globe and Mail profiled MasterChef Canada 2014 champion Eric Chong, a graduate of McMaster’s Engineering program.

The Hamilton Spectator featured Mandeep Malik (DeGroote School of Business) in its WhoWhatWear feature, where he described how, in his role as a professor, he strives to balance formality and approachability in his dress.

Community  engagement:
CBC Radio’s Metro Morning spoke to Jean Chamberlain-Froese (Obstetrics and Gynecology) about maternal and child health during the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Summit in Toronto.

The Hamilton Spectator, Victoria Times-Colonist, CTV Edmonton and CBC Radio’s Ontario Morning all spoke to participants in the Brain Bee, a national competition held at McMaster to test high-school students’ knowledge of the brain.

The Hamilton Spectator reported that former McMaster president Alvin Lee is to be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Hamilton Arts Awards. Later in the week, the Spec later covered the awards ceremony.

The Hamilton Spectator published an op-ed by Engineering graduate Mike Kovacs about the responsibilities of engineering societies.

Research:
CBC Hamilton and CHML reported on International Association for Great Lakes Research conference at McMaster.

CHCH Morning Live broadcast several segments live from the William Ready Division of Archives and Special Collections in Mills Memorial Library, where archives and research librarian Rick Stapleton displayed and explained several items from the collections.

The Hamilton Spectator reported on research by Jim Dunn (Health, Aging and Society) on solutions to homelessness, and later published an editorial applauding the results.
