The history of Rome through archaeological explorations: Lecture, Nov. 1
On Thursday, November 1, join McMaster’s Department of Classics for a special lecture featuring Dr. Paolo Carafa of the University of Rome, La Sapienza, the world’s top-ranked university in the study of archaeology.
Dr. Carafa, a key researcher in archaeology at La Sapienza and globally, will discuss the history of the city of Rome as revealed through archaeological explorations. He will reconstruct a narrative of the city’s development based on the material record of Rome’s monuments. He will also draw on his vast experience excavating in Rome to provide a geographic and diachronic discussion of the topography of the Eternal City.

About Paolo Carafa:
Paolo Carafa is Full Professor of Classical Archaeology at The University of Rome, “La Sapienza.” Prof. Carafa is engaged in studies of Roman Topography, Etruria in Etruscan and Roman periods (territory of Volterra), Basilicata (so-called Melfese area), Calabria (mainly ancient Sibaritide), Roman Suburbium in the Roman era and the analysis of monumental complexes in different urban centres of ancient Italy (Rome, northern slopes of the Palatine since 1987, Volterra 1987-1994, Pompeii since 1994, Veii since 1996, Rome, domus Augustana on the Palatine Hill since 2009). Since 2005 he has coordinated research projects dedicated to Roman urban landscapes and the architecture of ancient Latium. Together with the field operations, he has been involved in coordinating scientific research teams since 1986 with the aim of reconstructing the topography and landscapes through different phases of antiquity.
This event is taking place as part of MacGlobal (October 22 – November 9), three weeks of international programming to showcase the many international initiatives and activities taking place campus-wide.
MacGlobal is in support of McMaster’s Global Engagement Strategy as outlined in The McMaster Model for Global Engagement: A Strategy Document released in 2016. The document was the first step in the development of the university’s international strategy – a key institutional priority – and continues to provide a framework for the development of international activities at McMaster.
