A collision-prevention system for unmanned drones is just one of the projects to be unveiled at the electrical and computer engineering student poster day April 8.

With unmanned drones poised to start cruising the skies delivering pizza, flowers and parcels, mid-air accidents are probably inevitable.

But not if a group of electrical and computer engineering students has anything to do with it.

The students are developing a collision-prevention system for the drones which would allow them to “sense” each other and immediately chart an alternative course.

They belong to just one of the 40 teams of fourth-year engineering students who will showcase their futuristic inventions April 8 at McMaster.

This year’s projects include a digital water curtain, a driver fatigue-detection system and a pen that converts handwriting into digital text.

Also on display: a mine-detecting robot, augmented-reality business cards, a robotic goaltender and the “LifeLite”, which harnesses gravity’s energy to power small electronics.

The annual poster day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 8 in CIBC Hall, gives undergraduate engineers the opportunity to present their projects to both the public and industry professionals.

All are welcome at the event.
