Lights. Camera. Stopwatch.

It’s time for McMaster graduate students to tell the world what they’re up to, in the labs, libraries and out in the field. Welcome to the fourth annual McMaster Three-Minute Thesis Competition, also known as the 3MT.

The 3MT is an opportunity to share your research story – and how that research impacts the lives of others – with the McMaster and broader Hamilton communities.

You’re thinking: “No problem. I’ve done the conference thing. I’ve presented lots of times.”

Sure you have, but we threw in a few challenges … just to make the whole thing a little more fun for everyone.

Competitors have just three minutes – that’s 180 seconds – to present complex research in an engaging, accessible, and compelling way to a panel of non-specialist judges, using only one static slide. Now that’s a challenge.

And we know you’re up to it!

This year’s event happens on Thursday, February 18, at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre in downtown Hamilton. Preliminary heats will run throughout the day, with 12 competitors moving to the Final Heat at 4 p.m.

Register online now. Registration closes on February 1, 2016.

McMaster’s top five finalists will be awarded the Dean’s Award of Excellence Award in Communicating Research, as well as a cash prize, ranging from $1,000 for first place, to $250 for fifth place. Additonally, McMaster’s winner will represent the University on April 14, at the Ontario provincial final, Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo.

McMaster’s People’s Choice competition begins April 15. Online voting will determine who is awarded a $250 prize. Watch for more details.

New in 2016, virtual events in early February will offer competitors a chance to deliver their pitches and receive constructive feedback. More details about these critique sessions will be available soon.

Learn more about the 3MT experience

On Friday, January 15, an Information Session gives you a chance to hear about the 3MT experience from a past finalist and event organizers. The session runs from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and includes a pizza lunch.

To attend the Information Session, graduate students should register online.
