Students interested in becoming a Student Success Leader (SSL) can apply between now and Monday, Jan.19.

Registration is also open for the Jan. 10 Student Leadership Conference via OSCARplus.

Entering its fifth year, the SSL program provides students with an opportunity to learn and develop leadership skills by volunteering their time in one of 20 units across campus.

Since the program began, the number of SSLs has tripled to more than 180, says Sean Beaudette, service-learning and civic engagement program coordinator in the Student Success Centre.

“By becoming a Student Success Leader, students develop valuable leadership skills including strategies for working effectively in a team, workshop facilitation, and communicating with targeted audiences,” said Beaudette. “These skills can help them in academics as well as move them towards their career goals.”

In addition to automatic entry to the annual Student Leadership Conference, benefits of the program include: building leadership identity and experience, performing meaningful service in a University department, receiving coaching and mentoring from professionals and networking with other student leaders.

The Student Leadership Conference is offered by the Student Success Centre in partnership with Residence Life, McMaster Athletics & Recreation and the MSU. The theme of this year’s conference is Stepping Out, challenging students to move beyond their comfort zone to learn, grow and affect positive social change.

The conference takes place Jan. 10 and will attract approximately 300 current and aspiring leaders from across campus, as well as community representatives and staff and faculty presenters. Workshops focus on building knowledge, enhancing skills, and highlighting on-campus or societal issues to inspire change. The keynote speaker this year is Joel Hilchey.
