What do you need to know to make informed financial decisions? How can your understanding of global financial forces help tackle some of society’s “wicked problems?”

These are just some of the questions addressed in Finance for Everyone, a new massive open online specialization developed by McMaster and offered in partnership with Stanford University-based Coursera aimed at providing a toolkit for participants to increase their personal, corporate and global financial literacy.

Taught by Arshad Ahmad, Director of the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL) and Professor in the DeGroote School of Business, the specialization is made up of five courses designed to both teach the fundamentals of corporate and personal finance and explore the societal impacts of free-market, capitalist systems.

“Money– it creates excesses, but it also presents a means to solve some of the most wicked problems we confront, that’s why we need to understand it,” says Ahmad.

Designed to present complex financial concepts in an accessible way, Ahmad says the program provides an opportunity for participants from a variety of backgrounds to extend their learning, providing them with the knowledge they need to understand the language of finance and make informed personal financial decisions.

The online program features thought-provoking projects and activities, culminating in a capstone project. Throughout the program participants will connect with each other to discuss and share ideas online.

Students can take individual courses, or enroll in the five-course Finance for Everyone specialization certificate program.

The first course of this 5-course specialization is free to McMaster faculty and staff.  Contact miietl@mcmaster.ca before May 16 to enroll.

Students can enroll for subsequent cohorts anytime.
