Bhatia, director and senior scientist of the Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, found the antipsychotic drug thioridazine kills the cancer stem cells responsible for initiating leukemia without harming normal stem cells.

The research could lead to the development of anticancer drugs in the treatment of various cancers.

It was highlighted by the cancer society as one of 10 projects that help to reduce cancer rates, reduce mortality and improve the quality of life or those diagnosed with cancer.
