International Education Week can broaden your horizon

Beginning Monday, students at McMaster will be able to travel the globe from the comfort of campus, and maybe even plan future opportunities.

International Education Week, which runs Nov. 12 to 16, will highlight the many positive aspects of global learning and the ways it can enhance our social, cultural and economic well-being. The week-long affair features a number of student-friendly events and activities, and McMaster will join more than 100 countries in celebrating IEW.

Studying abroad can offer a wide range of experiential learning opportunities to McMaster students from all faculties.

“I’ve always had an adventurous spirit, and I enjoy learning about new cultures and people,” says Jessica Yu, a recent graduate from the Faculty of Science, and past member of the McMaster International eXchange student club.

Yu went on exchange to Deakin University in Australia during the 2010/11 academic year, and used the opportunity to explore a foreign country, meet new friends and study in a beautiful and diverse environment. Making the most of her time abroad, Yu and a group of fellow exchange students logged more than 12,000 km in cars and campers – visiting the Outback, the Great Barrier Reef and just about everywhere in between.

“When you speak to most exchange students, I think there is a mutual understanding about the value of an exchange,” says Yu. “Many of the sights were amazing, but most important was the personal development and new friends that you meet along the way.”
