An in-depth and comprehensive review of all McMaster’s information technology services is complete with the committee making substantive recommendations for improving the provision, governance and funding of the University’s IT infrastructure and related service provision.

“This has been hard work and a very complex task,” says David Wilkinson, provost and co-sponsor of the review. “The committee undertook a wide ranging and deep look and heard from community members from every part of the University. The report identifies the key areas where improvement is necessary and provides a clear roadmap forward.”

Among the key recommendations:

  • Improving the way IT services are managed by building a more inclusive governance approach improving representation from academic areas
  • Introducing clearer mandates and expectations for IT services particularly in research, teaching and learning applications
  • Identifying ways of bringing together what have been fragmented services and areas while also contemplating better ways of providing those services to faculty, students and staff
  • Considering the way IT services are funded
  • Strengthening the IT customer service framework across the institution
  • Improving faculty member’s access to basic teaching and learning IT services and developing more innovative tools to support those areas
  • Enhancing access to research IT services
  • Improving core services like WiFi, networking and other IT infrastructure

“We are grateful for the committee’s thoughtful recommendations,” says Roger Couldrey vice-president Administration and a co-sponsor of the review. “We encourage the community to read the report. Together we’ve identified some key actions as the University begins implementation.”
