Overall, the initiative was successful in reducing electricity consumption across campus by $15,000 — avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and raising awareness for energy conservation in the process.

Additionally, a total of 19 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (equivalent to 790 propane BBQ cylinders) was avoided during the competition.

The Chasing the Peak challenge took place on campus between July and September. The efforts of faculty and staff were clearly visible in the results, with all major energy-consuming facilities showing a reduction trend.

Top Performing Facility Award:

Mills Memorial Library was the overall winner, with a 24 per cent reduction of electricity usage. MDCL had a slightly higher electrical usage reduction of 31 per cent. However, the building was adjusted lower due to ongoing renovation in the facility during the competition period.

Individual/Group Award:

Utilities Services took home this year’s Individual/Group Award. Staff stayed beyond regular hours to monitor the provincial electricity demand on a real-time basis, start equipment after peak hours and cool various facilities across campus.
