Collective Arts brews unique learning experience for Mac students

Students in Kim Jones’ second-year measurements course visit Collective Arts Brewing to learn about real-world application of what they learn in the classroom.

Students in Kim Jones’ second-year measurements course deal with a variety of complex and hard-to-understand issues every day: the statistics behind sampling and analysis, measurement error and something called “data acquisition theory,” for instance.

So wouldn’t it be nice for them to visit an industry that deals with these issues hands-on?

That was the idea behind Saturday’s field trip to the Collective Arts Brewery in Hamilton’s north end.

Students spent part of the day touring the facility with brewery staff, who showed them the beer-making process from start to finish.

The tour gave the students a glimpse at how the theories they learn in the classroom play out in the real world.

Much like the students, staff at Collective Arts need to know how to measure pressure, temperature, pH levels and more to ensure they’re producing the best possible product.

They also employ a variety of equipment and sensors that the students ordinarily only read about.

Staff at Collective Arts say there may be opportunities for McMaster students to visit other aspects of their operation, including their marketing and sales departments, in the future.
