Updated Flexible Work Guidelines available now
McMaster University has updated its Flexible Work Guidelines.
These guidelines, developed through extensive consultations as part of the Future Workplace Strategy (FWS) committee’s efforts, underscore the university’s commitment to supporting employees and maintaining the vibrant on-campus culture.
The committee, established in 2023, consulted with community members across campus, bringing together contributors across four core areas: talent planning, learning and innovation, employee experience, and work environment.
“I am grateful to the more than 120 McMaster community members who have been engaged at different levels supporting conversations and planning, as well as the various subject matter experts and others who shared their thoughts and expertise with the committee,” Tighe says.
Feedback from the consultation process informed the development of several initiatives to create an inclusive, collaborative and innovative work environment.
Recently launched initiatives include:
- New employee listening strategies, such as onboarding and offboarding surveys;
- Leveraging new technologies, such as provisional guidelines for using generative AI in the workplace; Introduction to GenAI training; Digital Capability Learning Hub;
- A refresh of learning and programming resources for employees and managers, such as total rewards overviews, performance management, coach approach, employee development information, retirement planning, Student-Staff-Experience-Guide, employee health and well-being, workload management, employee recognition, including new employee appreciation day activities.
The updated Flexible Work guidelines will support supervisors and employees in exploring and establishing flexible work arrangements, while maintaining connectivity and continuity in meeting diverse operational needs across campus.
Key updates for employees and leaders:
- Commitment to regular onsite work in alignment with operational needs of the faculty/department
- The AVP/dean will review and approve arrangements within their faculty/department
- Exceptional short-term or fully remote work arrangements will need to be approved by the respective VP as well as the AVP/CHRO
