University Scholar — call for nominations
Nominations for the title of University Scholar (US) are now officially open.
The deadline for nominations is November 1, 2019.
The subsequent deadline for the submission of the full package of information for those candidates selected to move on to the final phase will be February 1, 2020.
The Faculty selection committee will make its recommendation to the Senate Committee on Appointments by March 1, 2020.
Please forward by November 1 (addressed and delivered via email or hardcopy to the Faculty dean) a letter of nomination (maximum 3 pages) signed by four individuals, at least two of whom must be McMaster professors. Self-nomination is not acceptable. The letter should address all aspects of the selection criteria, paying particular attention to why they feel the nominee is a complete scholar. The nominee’s CV is also required.

This FAQ document includes the maximum number of University Scholars which can be appointed in each Faculty this year. Note that for some Faculties this is zero so potential nominators should read this document.
If you have any further questions not addressed in the FAQs please contact the University Secretariat.
Distinguished University Professor
The number of Distinguished University Professors shall be restricted to no more than 2% of all full-time members of faculty, including tenure-stream, teaching stream, CAWAR and Special (with the latter stream counted using a weighting factor of 0.2). The maximum number of positions will be re-evaluated every three years – this re-evaluation of numbers took place in 2017/2018 and therefore will take place again next year in 2020-2021. At this time the numbers equate to 22 possible DUP titles.
There are currently 22 DUPs therefore there will be zero DUP titles available for the 2019-2020 year.
