Take advantage of the GST/HST break on campus

Starting Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, McMaster students, faculty, and staff will receive a GST/HST break on select purchases across campus.

The tax relief, which continues until Feb. 15, 2025, provides savings on essential items. The GST/HST will be automatically removed at the time of purchase.

Where to Find the Savings 

  • Campus Store: Tax relief includes purchases of textbooks, children’s clothes, games, toys.
  • Food service outlets: Pay no GST/HST on meals and snacks at dining locations across campus, including Centro, La Piazza, Bistro and Starbucks.

Textbooks 

Students can save on textbooks at the Campus Store and elsewhere, if they buy them during the tax relief period.

Important Exclusions 

While the tax relief applies to many items, there are a few exceptions:

  • Vending machine food and drink
  • Non-food merchandise (such as Starbucks mugs)
  • Magazines, notebooks, calendars
  • Alcoholic beverages with more than 7 per cent ABV (such as spirits and liqueurs)
  • Other items: Be sure to check specific items at the point of sale to confirm whether they are eligible for the tax relief.
