Ontario Bill 26 in effect as of July 1, 2023, for post-secondary institutions

The provincial government’s Bill 26, Strengthening Post-Secondary Institutions and Students Act, 2022, amends the Ministry of Training, College and Universities Act and the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005 to add new requirements regarding sexual misconduct towards a student by an employee of a publicly funded university or college. The new requirements came into effect on July 1, 2023.

McMaster’s current Sexual Violence Policy is already in compliance with the new Bill. However, the university’s policy is currently undergoing a review as part of the regular, provincially mandated three-year review process. The review includes comprehensive and campus-wide consultation with students, faculty and staff.

Any modifications recommended through the review process will continue to be in compliance with Bill 26.
