MUFA Awards recognize outstanding professors
Three exceptional faculty members have received this year’s McMaster University Faculty Association Awards for Outstanding Service.
Thomas Hawke, Lawrence Mbuagbaw, and Bruce Milliken received this year’s MUFA awards at the Annual General Meeting this month, in recognition of their exceptional service to faculty, librarians, staff and/or students.
Thomas Hawke | Professor, Pathology and Molecular Medicine | Faculty of Health Sciences
Hawke’s award recognizes his research excellence, leadership in education and his mentorship and support for graduate and postdoctoral scholars.
A research educator, Hawke is internationally renowned for the quality, breadth and impact of his research on skeletal muscle. He is also studying cultured meat, a promising area of research for food security.
Hawke is also known for recruiting and supervising exceptional graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with diverse backgrounds, lived experiences and expertise. And as the Associate Chair of Research in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, he is known for working collaboratively to increase the department’s research profile.

Lawrence Mbuagbaw | Associate Professor, Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact | Faculty of Health Sciences
Mbuagbaw’s award recognizes his service, leadership, mentorship and scholarly impact.
Internationally recognized for his work in global health, HIV research and equity-driven methodologies, Mbuagbaw has advised the World Health Organization, the Canadian Drug Agency and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, elevating McMaster’s global research profile, shaping clinical trial design and health equity research.
Mbuagbaw is also a committed leader in equity, diversity and inclusion — serving as EDI Lead and steering committee member for Canadian Network for Statistical Training in Trials (CANSTAT), as co-chair of McMaster’s Black Faculty Cohort Hiring Committee, as a referee for equitable admissions in the Honours Health Sciences program, as the lead investigator for Strategic Excellence and Equity in Recruitment and Retention (STEER/R) research program at HEI, and as co-chair of a community of practices for inclusive teaching at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Bruce Milliken | Professor, Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour | Faculty of Science
Milliken’s award recognizes his service to the research community, including immense contributions to grant reviews and editing major journals; his level-headed leadership; his dedication to student success; and his commitment to equity.
Known for his unfailing support of students, Milliken is generous with his time and expertise, offering extra training, collaborating across labs and creating videos to prepare students for graduate studies.
Milliken is also MUFA’s representative to the Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force, and is known to be a tireless advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion.
Milliken’s peers praised his calm, steadfast leadership and his compassion and support for his colleagues.
