Microsoft storage limits will not be implemented before fall 2025
The implementation of new individual Microsoft storage limits has been postponed until fall 2025.
McMaster initially announced it would be implementing Microsoft storage limits effective January 2025, in response to the global storage limits introduced by Microsoft.
In response to community feedback, the implementation was first delayed to May 2025 and now is being further extended to fall 2025, at the earliest.
In addition, when the new storage limits come into effect, the email limit for faculty and staff will be 50GB, an increase from the previously proposed 25GB.
These decisions were made in consultation with faculty, staff and student representatives through a series of collaborative discussions over the past months.
This extension provides additional time for the campus community to adjust their usage habits to stay within our proposed storage limits.
Despite the delayed implementation of the new storage limits, it remains essential for McMaster to manage storage effectively and reduce unnecessary data across the Microsoft environment.
To that end, the university is asking the community to continue to adhere to their individual storage limits as it will ease the transition when the limits are implemented.
McMaster will be reaching out to the community over the summer to share information, resources and training to help community members manage their storage effectively.
The university will also implement various system-related measures to help optimize Microsoft storage usage. These measures will be automated and require minimal action from individual users. UTS will also be communicating these as they are implemented.
