McMaster’s The Hub building evacuated due to smoke; no injuries
No one was injured after extensive smoke filled a stairwell of The Hub building Tuesday evening. Campus safety discovered a device in the stairwell emitting smoke. The building was evacuated. Hamilton Police quickly responded, the building was ventilated, and police are continuing the investigation. The building resumed normal operations later in the evening.
“It is a totally irresponsible action,” said Sean Van Koughnett, McMaster’s associate vice-president, Students. “The person responsible for the incident put people in the building at risk and we will take all actions possible to work with police to identify a suspect so we can take action under university policies.”
The Hub is located on the west side of campus next to the Student Athletics Centre.
Anyone who left belongings in the building when it was evacuated can pick them up Wednesday morning.
