McMaster psychiatrist known for mentoring takes award

Associate professor Karen Saperson has a reputation for mentoring both medical residents and new faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences towards academic excellence.

The psychiatrist has been recognized for that passion with the Royal College/AMS Donald R. Wilson Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, for inspiring and developing new teaching methods that have grown the quality and quantity of education scholarship from her department.

For example, she mentored a group of residents and nurses who teamed up to research how well they understood each other’s role in the psychiatric emergency room, and found communications breakdowns that could impact patient care. She also established a leadership community of practice for leadership skills and education scholarship output.
