Flags lowered in recognition of International Trans Day of Remembrance
Nov. 20 is the International Trans Day of Remembrance, a time to honour and remember the lives of transgender, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals lost to anti-trans violence and discrimination.
At McMaster, the flags will be lowered in recognition of the day and as a reminder of the ongoing need to dismantle the systemic barriers and prejudice that threaten the safety and dignity of people in our communities, writes Barrington Walker, vice-provost (Equity and Inclusion).
“On this day, as we lower the flag on University Hall in recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance, let us recommit to building a more inclusive, equitable world,” he writes.
“Honouring the memory of those we have lost is essential, but our greatest tribute lies in transforming the practices of the living.”
