Be wary of CryptoWall Ransomware in email, on web
CryptoWall Ransomware is a very real and urgent threat at McMaster University. This malware encrypts files and folders located in the user’s Documents folder and on shared network drives and demands up to $1000 ransom to decrypt the files.
We suspect that this malware is being distributed via email, embedded in a PDF file attached to a phishing message.
Everyone needs to be very careful about the websites they visit, the links they click in emails and also the attachments they are opening.
If you believe you have been infected by this malware, please disconnect your computer from the network and report to UTS as soon as possible.
University Technology Services thanks you for your cooperation and understanding.
If you have any questions or concerns, or experience any problems please contact the UTS Service Desk at uts@mcmaster.ca or ext. 2-HELP (24357).
