A commitment to an inclusive community
At a time when there are greater levels of anxiety and discord in the world and increasing concerns about racism and incidents of discrimination, it is important for members of the University to work together to combat such issues, support the affected groups, and reaffirm McMaster’s commitment to building an inclusive community.
This week our community became aware of an incident involving a group of Muslim female students living off campus. While the police continue their investigation, they have let the University know that, at this stage, there is no evidence of any threat to campus safety. The University continues to monitor the situation and to offer support to the affected students.
As an institution, we are saddened and troubled by any incidents of harassment or discrimination within our community and recognize the anxiety and apprehension that such events generate.
“The values and position of the University on these issues should never be in doubt. Our commitment to building a safe and inclusive environment, free from acts of harassment, intimidation or discrimination of any kind is absolute,” says President Patrick Deane. “Disrespectful, violent or abusive behaviour in any form has no place in our community or on our campus. As members of the University we bear a shared responsibility to uphold the values of respect and collegiality that are fundamental to the academy.”
There are many campus supports and programs in place to assist members of our community. The Human Rights and Equity Services office provides counselling and other services, including “Challenging Islamophobia on Campus” drop-in sessions. Student Affairs through the Student Wellness Centre and other services assists students and provides a range of programs, including drop-in sessions and public talks. The Presidents Advisory Committee on Building an Inclusive Community (PACBIC) is engaged with these important issues through its ongoing working groups on Race, Racialization and Racism; Inter-Faith issues; and Violence Against Women.
Members of the campus community are encouraged to report any concerns and to access the many forms of assistance that the University is able to provide.
