McMaster School of the Arts presents Lope de Vega’s Women and Servants

The McMaster School of the Arts presents this year’s Fall Major Production of Women and Servants, by Lope de Vega, directed by Peter Cockett, on-stage in the Blackbox Theatre November 10th, 11th, 15th-18th, 2017.

While jealousy was ruling the nobles in the Golden Age, who was ruling Spain? Women and Servants!

The Spanish noblemen rule their extended families of relatives and servants, demanding loyalty, obedience, and insisting family honour should be the highest ideal. But in the words of Luciana, the play’s heroine, “love has no master,” it “disdains them all!” In Lope De Vega’s subversive comedy, the women and the servants defy their lords and through wit and comic trickery find a way to fulfil their romantic desires. Lost for over four hundred years and discovered in a dusty library in 2014, Lope De Vega’s play gives us new, comic insight into the Golden Age of Spanish drama. McMaster’s School of the Arts’ production of Women and Servants will be the world premiere of the English translation of the play – a fitting event for the opening of Wilson Hall’s new black box theatre.
