To celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 we’re getting a head start on learning about Indigenous ways of knowing. Join us for a fascinating presentation that blends local culture, history and modern-day astronomy. We will share an example of a Six Nations’ traditional night-sky story to learn about how the bear and the brothers is retold every year with the rotating patterns in the night sky.

See the same stars with a completely different understanding and appreciation!

This talk will also briefly describe the collaboration and partnership between an Indigenous student at Western University, Sasha Doxtator, and a non-Indigenous faculty member, Robert Cockcroft a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the resulting new Indigenous astronomy course that incorporates stories like the one above in a two-eyed seeing approach. This approach not only helps increase Indigenous content in the university’s curricula, but also aims to make the university more attractive and inclusive for all students.
