The Future of the Commons

One million species at risk. Climate emergencies. Can we find a way to work together in a divided world? Thirty years ago, the late Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom argued that we can avoid ‘the tragedy of the commons’ – the collapse of shared natural resources from overuse – when we work together. Dustin Garrick revisits the idea of the commons, drawing from global experience and outlining the case for hope.

Garrick is an associate professor of environmental management at the University of Oxford, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He has been a Fulbright Fellow, AAAS Leshner Fellow and recipient of the 2018 Sustainable Water Management Prize from the Botin Foundation in Spain. He has worked with the World Bank, OECD and The Nature Conservancy as well as local partners across Australia, Africa and the Americas. He is the former Philomathia Chair of Water Policy at McMaster University, where he remains an adjunct professor in the Department of Political Science.
