The Department of Medicine and the Divisions of Respirology and Allergy and Clinical Immunology are pleased to announce the 5th Frederick E. Hargreave Lectureship in Asthma and Allergy to honour the memory of our dear colleague, who passed away on the 15th of June, 2011. Professor Freddy Hargreave was one of the giants of respiratory medicine. His work helped change the way we understand, diagnose and treat asthma, bronchitis and COPD. In doing so, he significantly improved the care of patients throughout the world and his work improved many lives. At the Firestone Clinic, over a 40-year career, he taught many students and fellows from all over the world, many of whom returned home and became internationally recognized in their own right. He made St Joseph’s Hospital and the Firestone Clinic world famous, but more importantly, he cared for individual patients in an exemplary manner with unfailing courtesy, dedication, humility, and kindness. He constantly endeavored to bring the health challenges his patients faced every day to the research community in order to find better ways to improve the quality of their lives.
The 2017 Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Guy Brusselle.
Dr. Brusselle is a professor of medicine at Ghent University in Belgium and head of the Laboratory for Translational Research of Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. He received his medical degree from Ghent University in 1990. Investigating the functional role of cytokines interleukin-4 and interleukin-5 in allergic asthma under the supervision of the late Professor Romain Pauwels, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1997. As a respiratory physician with a keen clinical and scientific interest in asthma, severe asthma, and COPD, his laboratory directs a cutting-edge translational research program and co-ordinates a number of international and European cohort and clinical trials. In addition to his busy research and clinical responsibilities, at the University, he regularly teaches courses on study designs and research methodology and immunopathology of airway diseases to medical, biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences students. He has served the European Respiratory Society (ERS) as Guidelines Director and is currently the chair of the ERS science council. With over 250 peer-reviewed publications, Professor Brusselle is one of the leading clinician scientists in the world in airway diseases.
