This article uses newly available data to analyze academic freedom worldwide. We evaluate domestic and global arguments using regression models with country fixed effects for 155 countries 1960-2022. Our findings help explain why academic freedom has broadly increased over recent decades, and also why it has experienced episodic, including recent, reversals.
