Joy Lapps is a musician, composer and arts educator. Her efficiency with the tenor pan and diverse performance range have led to great audience receptions and flattering recognition from seasoned professional pannists. She’s performed at various festivals including Toronto’s Afrofest, Muhtadi’s International Drumming Festival, Toronto’s TD Jazz Festival, and Antigua’s Moods of Pan Festival. Joy performs primarily with her quartet and often expands it for even larger musical projects. She is also a member and supporter of Toronto-based steelband Pan Fantasy.

As an audience favourite, Joy brings her genuine and bright personality to performances. Joy has released five recordings: “Praise on Pan: How Great Thou Art” (2004), “Make a Joyful Noise” (2006), “It’s Christmas Time” (2007), and an EP of original compositions entitled “Morning Sunrise” (2014).

Joy is currently focusing on writing and arranging new music for her ensembles since completing a Masters in Music Composition at York University and looks forward to a new chapter of creation, collaboration and performance. She recently spent three months at Downsview Public Library as their Toronto Arts Council Artist in Residence, providing free lessons, workshops and special performances. During the academic year, Joy visits various schools as an Ontario Arts Council Artist in Residence. Reflecting on her blessings, Joy notes four factors foremost: “God’s gift of music, dedicated teachers, extremely nurturing parents, and a supportive family and community”.
