Join us for another installment of the popular Science Stories: A Science Communication Speaker Series with host Katie Moisse, Assistant Professor, Interdisciplinary Science.

This fall the McMaster community is pleased to welcome guest speaker, Wudan Yan, an independent journalist based in the Pacific Northwest.

When Western researchers drop into other countries to extract information and specimens without meaningful partnerships with local communities it is often referred to as parachute science. In this free, virtual talk, Wudan will walk us through her process for reporting “The Pandemic is Undoing Field Researchers’ Oldest Assumption,” a feature-length story published in The Atlantic about the perils of parachute science. A Q&A session will follow the discussion.

Wudan Yan is a magazine and enterprise reporter, mainly covering science and society. She’s written for The Atlantic, The Guardian, National Geographic, The New York Times, among many others.
