Her father was the well known artist-engraver, Wesley Bates; her mother the artist, Katherine MacDonald, while her maternal grandparents were also artists. Her grandfather was TR MacDonald, one-time director of the Art Gallery of Hamilton and her grandmother, Rae Hendershot, was also an accomplished artist who persevered in the shadow of her more famous husband. Ms Bates has worked with the Rae Hendershot Project to bring her grandmother’s work to wider audiences.
