The Emotional Work of Feedback

Feedback is emotional. In health professions education we typically treat emotions as background noise – to be ignored or managed. But emotions are intimately tied up with learning and being human. Emotions can paralyse, leading to feedback avoidance for learners and educators alike. And they can motivate. Tracing the role of emotions in feedback provides insight to the work that emotions do both productive and less productive. A shift towards emotionally reflexive practice requires, in the first instance, to acknowledge the presence of emotions in clinical learning environments, this may in time, enable feedback rich learning environments to flourish.

This event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Dr. Geoffrey Norman, Professor Emeritus, Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact.
