Abstract: This project explores the experiences of family members and elderly residents of long-term care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in Ontario. Over 80% of COVID deaths in Canada in the first wave 2020 occurred in long-term care homes.

Frail elderly persons in long-term care experienced devastating cognitive, physical and psychological consequences.

Prior to the pandemic, family members provided significant levels of quotidian care for residents, offsetting chronically low staffing levels in these institutions.

Through personal narratives of husbands, wives, and children of long-term care residents, Dr. Badone illustrates how relatives sought to sustain their partners or parents by promoting the moral personhood of these family members in care.
