In this reading, Maya Stovall discusses her new book publication, Liquor Store Theatre (Duke University Press 2020), the LST video project, and how white supremacy’s anti-black caste system, hundreds of years in the making, continues to organize everyday life in contemporary Detroit. In the video project of the same name, Stovall stages and video-records conceptual performances in the streets and sidewalks surrounding liquor stores in her neighborhood, as a point of departure for conversations about city life. With topics ranging from abstraction in conceptual art to dialectical materialism, Liquor Store Theatre presents a call for the end of anthropology as we know it, and much more.
