Leading in Health: “Advocacy as a Resident Physician: Being a Little Fish in a Big Aquarium”

Thursday, June 17, 2021 | 12-1 PM EST

Before jumping into advocacy it’s important to have a solid understanding of the environment and the many different factors at play. There are always multiple perspectives to take into account, and any change, even keeping the status quo, is going to benefit some and harm others. As a leader one needs to know the risks you and your organization might be taking, who you’re taking with you and who you might be leaving behind, and think about how you can mitigate the harms. Discover how self awareness, emotional intelligence and communication skills can help you to jump into this big aquarium and stay afloat rather than be eaten by the sharks.

Lauren Bilinsky (Emerging Leaders 2019) is a postgraduate year four Public Health & Preventive Medicine Resident Physician at the University of Calgary and completed her family medicine residency in 2020. She is also the Vice President of Leadership and Education, and President-elect for the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta. As part of this role Lauren is the Resident Observer on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta Council.

Following Lauren’s talk there will be an open Emerging Leaders Information Session. Learn more about the program, ask questions and chat with HLA staff about the Emerging Leaders Program.
