New and diffuse forms of media have created increased social space for the sharing and spreading of conspiracy theories and fake news. As technological and cultural trends undermine the authority of traditional sources of information such as the news media and academia, many observers have expressed concern that ours is a ‘post-truth’ era, and that systemic distrust in crucial actors and institutions could have unwelcome consequences. What tools, habits, and dispositions can help us to develop a healthy skepticism that strikes a balance between unacceptable gullibility and unhealthy cynicism?
