On September 21 throughout the day the University is hosting activities for the campus and general community in support of peace.

All are welcome to attend, or simply take a moment of your choice, to participate in peace, and to reflect.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

Activities and contributions:

1) Public events:

All day:

Throughout the day:

  • 10 a.m., “Pop-Up for Peace”: Led by McMaster Peace and Philosophy graduate, Hans Loewig, downtown at King and James;
  • 12 p.m., One Minute for Peace: Observe the UN-initiated, one minute of silence to reflect on peace, and how we can create it, led by Professor Nancy Doubleday, Director of Peace Studies, flagpoles in front of BSB
  • 2:30 p.m. “Trees for Peace”: Words of Aldo Leopold, by Wayne Terryberry. Tree planting, meet on lawn between Hamilton Hall and the University Club, Led by McMaster Outdoor Recreation and the McMaster Water Network Student Chapter
  • 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., Peace Walk: led by Professor Jorge Fabra, Peace Studies, meet at the flagpoles in front of BSB
  • 4:30 – 5 p.m., Peace Meditation: led by Professor Brian Baetz, Indigenous Studies outdoor classroom behind Faculty Club
  • 5 – 6 p.m., Remember your Humanity: Join Myron Groover, Reference Librarian and Archivist, for a display of memorabilia and a live reading of the Russell – Einstein Manifesto in the Russell Archives. Please note, space is limited. RSVP to Anita Blaney.
