INTERCONNECTIONS arose from a collaboration between Clara Laratta and Jordan Barker from the intersecting perspective of art and science. They believe experiencing nature is essential to human well-being and want to ensure that it will be available for future generations. The work developed through their study of the way nature, humans and animals are impacted and interact with one another.
Barker’s map-based works originate from rigid and systematic scientific protocols depicting density, size and variation of native and invasive tree species in McMaster forest as well as elevation, convexity, slope and aspect. He attempts to provide motivation for exploration of the area.
Laratta’s photo-based work provides macro perspectives of the same subject matter. Images of tree bark show soft and subtle assets that can be witnessed through simple observation. This is juxtaposed by images highlighting landscapes of the results of ever rising human intervention.
The works on display, all point one to exit left, take a step outdoors, and enjoy McMaster Forest.
