Everyone welcome.
Ahead of the total solar eclipse occurring on April 8, learn about the important roles of eclipses in history, physics and astronomy.
It’s more than a wondrous, if albeit short-lived, spectacle: eclipses of both the Sun and Moon have revealed a rich knowledge set about our solar system, and fundamental physics and have provided insights into the evolution of our Earth-Moon system.
Dr. Welch traces some of the pivotal research, e.g., related to general relativity and the “transit method” that informs our understanding of other planetary systems. Q&A to follow. ~1 hr. total.
