#HASTalks is a seminar series curated by The Department of Health, Aging & Society at McMaster University.

Jessica Maxwell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Aging & Society and Social Psychology Program at McMaster University, will discuss how our beliefs about the self, world, and sexuality shape our sexual and relationship satisfaction.

BELIEFS IN THE BEDROOM AND BEYOND

In this talk, Dr. Maxwell presents three in-progress papers detailing how our beliefs about the self, world, and sexuality shape our sexual and relationship satisfaction. In Study 1, Dr. Maxwell illustrates how body satisfaction indirectly predicts relationship satisfaction through sexual satisfaction across sexual orientation groups (n = 25,512). In Study 2, Dr. Maxwell examines whether couple members (n = 966 couples) being congruent in political beliefs links to their sexual and relationship satisfaction. Lastly, Dr. Maxwell showcases how beliefs about whether you can improve your sex life prospectively shape relationship and sexual satisfaction in people in newly dating relationships (n = 195) followed over 12 weeks. Overall, this body of work underscores how our beliefs at various levels are associated with our relationship and sexual well-being.
