Are Social Media Users Open-Minded, Narcissistic, or Machiavellian? Why people use social media and how it affects their mental health

Why do some people use social media to write amusing personal anecdotes and exchange “likes” and comments with their friends, whereas others use it to declare love to a significant other, engage in political and academic debate, or recount the details of last night’s dinner? Over the last decade, the ubiquitous use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has led to significant changes in the way people communicate and interact. On the one hand, social media can promote positive social bonding experiences that reduce loneliness and enhance well-being; on the other, social media may promote negative behaviours such as trolling, surveillance, and narcissistic self-focus.

Tara Marshall, Associate Professor, Department of Health, Aging & Society, cross appointed with the Social Psychology program, McMaster University, will discuss why certain personalities use social media, how they use it, and the effects it may have on mental health. The use of social media by different age groups – e.g., millennials and the elderly – will be a particular focus.
