An Associate Professor at McMaster University’s Department of Anthropology, Dr. Tristan Carter will introduce us to the discoveries and associated challenges of the Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project (SNAP). Since 2013, SNAP has detailed the intermittent use of a chert source for stone tool production from ≥200,000 – 9,000 years ago. In 2019, however, they encountered a sanctuary atop the peak of a type usually associated with the much later ‘Minoan’ culture (~3500 years ago). This talk introduces us to the project’s larger intellectual contributions and the issues they face concerning the production of meaningful narratives that encompass Neanderthal hunter- toolmakers, via Bronze Age
worshippers, to the modern populations who exploit and reside in the area.
